Best Latex Mattress
Everyone seems to be looking for the best latex mattress. Latex is a mattress material that is gaining in popularity as sleepers search for a more comfortable and less toxic mattress. But what is latex? There are three basic types of latex:
1. Natural: this is actually foamed rubber direct from the rubber tree plant. It is used in mattresses and sounds like a great material because its natural, but in its unprocessed form latex shows inconsistent density and strength that affects its ability to support and comfort uniformly across the surface of the mattress and some people have allergic reaction to the proteins in it.
2. Dupont: is chemically created latex. It is a lower cost form of latex that can be “boardy” and hard in its feel. It’s often used in lower priced latex mattresses.
3. Talalay: is the process applied to natural latex to remove the proteins and improve its consistency to create the highest form of latex for consistent performance and quality.
Latex is a high cost, relatively heavy material. Most latex mattresses consist of a latex core, usually 2-7 inches in height, with layers of regular polyurethane foam below and above the latex for support and cushioning. Latex is also an expensive material so the more latex in the bed and the higher the quality of the latex the more the mattress costs. In our testing we find latex in the highest form (talalay) to be an effective material for cushioning, but lacking in the ability to proved adequate support. That’s because our durability testing shows that latex will soften substantially as it is used.
It is not uncommon for sleepers to complain of a bad back after several years of sleeping on a top quality, very expensive latex mattress. That is because the latex core has softened with use and reached the point where it can no longer offer the back support needed to maintain a healthy spine. Based upon our research and work with doctors we would never recommend a latex core mattress for this reason.
Our Relief Perfect Latex mattress was designed to solve the problem latex has in providing adequate support as it wears while accentuating its natural, soft feel. We combine an inner layer of top quality talalay latex on top of an innerspring for support and our advanced cushioning intelli-gel on top for the softest feel possible without sacrificing alignment support.
This combination of latex and intelli-gel for cushioning does two things that are very important: they provide extraordinary comfort and pressure relief (limiting the need to toss and turn) and insulate the sleeper from the transfer of energy sometimes associated with an innerspring mattress. So if you’re worried about your partner disturbing your sleep from excessive tossing and turning, this mattress is the one for you. It is much better for your back than any of the spring free options you might be looking at and our intelli-gel plus latex combination will last 2-3 times longer than any latex or other foam core mattress.
