Dust mites are microscopic critters that love indoor habitats. They especially love mattresses and bedding. This is because they can feed on flaked skin cells in your pillow, blankets and mattress. But are they really a problem? Or should they just be left alone?
Dust mites have been known to induce allergic reactions and are a common cause of asthma. Many allergic symptoms can have their root in dust mites.
There is the American Dust Mite and the Eurpoean Dust Mite, but for all intents and purposes, they are essentially the same thing and cause the same problems.
So how can they be avoided? They can be eradicated with certain powders, but its best to stop them before you get them. An intelliBED mattress is perfect for this as the Intelli-Gel in each mattress is resistant to dust mites.
If you do have a problem, try to simply wash your bedding or put your pillow in the dryer. Very high temperatures as well as very low temperatures kill dust mites.
Dust mites also thrive on the moisture in the air, so lower humidity is better. A very dry environment will not be able to produce or sustain nearly as many dust mites.
