Learn To Sleep Safer

In Say What?

LEARN ABOUT THE TOXINS IN TOADY’S MATTRESSES AND KNOW WHAT YOU’RE SLEEPING ON.

Today we know that environmental toxins can harm us. And that toxins have even found their way into the place we should feel safest of all, our beds. Growing evidence now links a frightening range of illnesses to chemical off-gassing from synthetic materials and flame-retardants. The same kinds found in most conventional mattresses today.

This is a potentially serious health threat when you consider our prolonged exposure. We spend roughly eight hours every day in bed sleeping. That’s one-third of your lives (25 years)! It’s worth taking a few moments now to better understand what you’re sleeping on so you can make informed purchase decisions and keep yourself and your family sleeping safer.

MATTRESSES WERE ONCE MADE OF NATURAL THINGS. TODAY THEY CONTAIN SYNTHETIC MATERIALS AND CHEMICALS KNOWN TO BE TOXIC.

In the early twentieth century, mattresses were made with steel springs wrapped in cotton batting. This combination provided both strong support and non-toxic cushioning. However, with the invention of petroleum-based polyurethane foam in 1937 things changed. By the 1950s polyurethane foam began to replace cotton in mattresses. Today most mattresses are made with these synthetic foams, even though they’re known to give off VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Exposure to petrol-based foams has been linked to respiratory and other health problems, according to the EPA.

Additionally, even seemingly benign outer mattress covers made of cotton can be dangerously full of pesticides today.

THE FLAME-RETARDANTS MEANT TO HELP US MAY ACTUALLY BE HARMING US.

Memory foam mattresses are foam core mattresses. All foam compresses surprisingly fast. In just the first two years of use, foam mattresses can lose up to 40percent of their resiliency (their ability to bounce back). With this steady degradation, the mattress progressively loses its ability to support the heaviest parts of your body (hips and shoulders) from sagging into the mattress. The lack of proper support and resulting poor sleep posture causes spinal misalignment, a leading cause of lower back pain.

Note: In side-by-side comparisons using pressure-mapping technology, intelliBED mattresses (with Gel Matrix inside) provided the greatest pressure relief of all major mattress brands tested. Specifically, intelliBED mattresses relieved pressure points around the body more than 50 percent better memory foam mattresses.

WE ABSORB TOXINS INTO OUR BODIES THROUGH OFF-GASSING.

The danger with conventional foam mattresses comes from chemical off-gassing, the emission of toxic fumes from foam fillers, adhesives, flame retardants and moisture barriers. That “new mattress smell is actually toxic off-gassing. The odor is particularly apparent with memory-foam mattresses. The problem is that we inhale these toxic fumes and even absorb them directly through our skin. Google “memory foam off-gassing” and you’ll find many stories of people that were unable to stand the chemical smell for the first several days of ownership. Unfortunately, this off-gassing continues to be a problem even after the smell goes away.

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS (INCLUDING THOSE FOUND IN MOST MATTRESSES) ARE LINKED TO DISEASE.

The connection between mattress toxins and disease is only now gaining the attention of the scientific community. Further (and expeditious) study is needed to keep us safe. But for now, better safe than sorry because there are already numerous known health issues related to toxic chemical exposure.

Asthma and Allergies: Scientists know that certain toxins affect the severity and frequency of some respiratory illnesses.
Autism: Researchers are discovering that autism may be caused partly by environmental factors.
Cancer: Over 90 percent of cancer cases are now believed to be caused by environmental factors and toxins

WHILE EXPOSURE TO TOXINS AFFECTS EVERYONE, CHILDREN AND PREGNANT WOMEN ARE AT GREATEST RISK.

Those who require more sleep such as infants, children, and pregnant women, are most affected by chemical off-gassing due to their prolonged exposure to mattress toxins.

Researchers have examined links between sleep patterns, sleep environment, and child development. One study by the Children’s Mercy Hospital in Missouri discovered a correlation between poor sleep and ADD/ADHD.

Research has also proven that significant exposure to toxins during pregnancy can be harmful to both mother and fetus. Studies confirm that pregnant women carry toxic chemicals in their blood and urine, including mattress toxins. (University of California, San Francisco) Another study found that toxic chemicals actually pass from a woman’s bloodstream, through the placenta, and to the fetus. Toxins were also identified in breast milk. (Harvard School of Health and Centers for Disease Control)

WHY TAKE ANY CHANCES WITH YOUR HEALTH? (ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE’S A NATURALLY PURE AND SAFE OPTION.)

At intelliBED® our mission is to keep you and our family sleeping safe and sound. That’s why our mattresses are made of non off-gassing and hypoallergenic materials.

• Gel Matrix, the next-generation cushioning material inside every intelliBED, was originally developed for the critical-care needs of traumatic injury patients. It’s made of 100 percent pure, food-grade mineral oil—the same thing baby oil is made of.
• Our fire retardant is made of a silica fiber with no bio-available chemicals. IntelliBED mattresses are the safest beds made for the healthiest sleep possible.
