Buying a mattress online can be kind of scary. You want to test drive a car before you buy it, so why not test a mattress? Well it’s not that simple.

Consider how most people buy a mattress

They see the ads. They go to the store. The salesman tells them to try different beds in their price range. After lying down on 3 or 4 beds for 5 or 10 minutes they make a choice. Sometimes they go to different stores and try to compare what they learned there and what they remember from the other stores. Finally, they buy. Usually, because the salesman reassures them it is the right bed for them. Sometimes with a line like “this is the bed I put my mother in law on”.

But how do you know how well a bed will work for you? Just because your friend has had one for a year or two that they like, does that mean its right for you and what will it be like after 5 or 6 years? Where are the facts? Where is the data? Try returning a store bought mattress and see what happens

When you buy a mattress in a store and it doesn’t do what you were told it would you’ll find that most stores will eventually take it back, but for an exchange with one of their other mattresses not a refund. You can also expect to be charged a return fee and probably a restocking fee. That’s because a mattress is a personal item and once its’ been slept on it can’t be resold as new. Some states allow it to be resold at a discount as “used” and some will not allow its resale at all. So a returned bed is a real problem for the retailer who sold it to you.
