QUICKLY COMPARE THE FOUR THINGS THAT MATTER MOST IN BEDS (BEFORE YOU BUY).
Some purchases are too important to leave to chance. Your mattress is one of them. Considering that we spend one-third of our lives in bed, and that inadequate sleep is increasingly linked to a frightening range of health problems, your mattress choice is critical. Additionally, a new bed is a significant investment for most people. So to make the best purchase decision (and avoid buyer’s remorse), don’t buy until you’ve read this article.

CHOOSE WISELY. UNDERSTAND HOW DIFFERENT MATTRESSES STACK UP IN TERMS OF COMFORT, SUPPORT, SAFETY, AND DURABILITY.
Not all beds are created equal. This is because mattress manufacturers use a wide variety of materials and designs, each of which produces different results that directly affect you and the quality of your sleep. To make comparison-shopping easier, we’ve tested and rated all of the most common mattresses in terms of four key criteria.
Essentially, comfort has everything to do with its ability to relieve the pressure that builds around the heaviest and most protruding parts of your body (hips and shoulders). Pressure-mapping image technology makes it easy to see how well different mattresses relieve pressure (and the resulting pain and discomfort that causes us to toss and turn throughout the night). The comfort rating is based on a scale of one to ten, one being the hardest and least comfortable and ten being the softest and most comfortable.
Support is one of the most critical functions of any mattress. Support comes from the inner core material that carries the main weight of your body. Inadequate support results in spinal misalignment, one of the leading causes of lower back pain. The support rating is a measure of how well each mattress keeps your back in proper alignment. The support rating is also based on a scale of one to ten, with one being the least supportive and ten being the most supportive.
Most people don’t give much thought to mattress safety, but they should. Surprising dangers lurk in many of the mattresses sold today. This is due to the materials and chemicals used in the manufacturing process. For example, toxic off-gassing from synthetic foams and flame retardants can cause headaches, skin irritations, allergic reactions, even serious diseases. The safety rating is based on analysis of the different types of materials used in each mattress. Once again, this is a ten-point scale with one being least safe (most toxic) and ten being most safe (natural and non-off-gassing).
Most mattresses today are made of inexpensive materials and wear out faster than might you think. These mattresses feel great when new but quickly begin to sag, steadily losing comfort and support. In fact, most mattresses fail long before their warranties expire, preventing you from getting the quantity and quality of sleep needed to maintain good health. The Rollator test is an industry-standard used to simulate wear over time and measure how well mattresses maintain their shape and resiliency
(ability to bounce back). The durability rating ranks mattresses from one to ten with one being the least durable (fastest to wear out and require replacement) and ten being the most durable and long lasting.
