What Is Intelli-Gel?

Intelli-Gel® is a revolutionary gel material used in hospital beds, seat cushions, shoe inserts and now mattresses for the home. Intelli-Gel was developed in Utah in the early 1990′s and behaves radically different then traditional cushioning materials. Foam and springs are compressible materials.

By nature, there is a linear relationship between how far the material is compressed and the resultant force that pushes back. The further it is compressed, the harder it pushes back. That explains why protruding body parts like your hips and shoulders experience pressure points. They compress the materials further, resulting in isolated pressure spikes on them.

Intelli-Gel behaves differently. Intelli-Gel is made from a soft, but extremely strong and elastic solid copolymer gel formed into a series of vertical support members that begin to compress under light loads, but when the pressure on any localized area becomes uncomfortable, the support members relax allowing that localized part of the body to sink into the mattress. In this way, pressure points under the hip and shoulder areas are reduced by a remarkable 50-80%.

Another highly unique and important characteristic of Intelli-Gel is the column buckling, honey comb design of the many individual support squares each of which have the ability to sense when the pressure load would be uncomfortable to the human body and automatically relax to relieve that pressure.

Thus, the extreme pressure caused by the protruding hips and shoulders is sufficient to cause the support members to relax while the lower pressure caused by the broad recessed back or side generally do not apply sufficient pressure to cause the support members to collapse. So, these smart intelliBED mattresses result in a soft, comfortable feeling under the hip and shoulder area while providing a firm, supportive surface under the rest of your body creating the perfect sleep surface for long-term health and wellness.

An additional benefit of Intelli-Gel is its incredible durability. Under normal sleep conditions, testing has shown that Intelli-Gel (when matched with high quality materials) will only lose about 3-5% of it’s ability to support weight over the entire life of the bed. By contrast, the highest quality materials used in the industry will experience 3 to 5 times this amount of wear. In fact most beds are worn out within 5 years of purchase and need to be replaced. A Gel-Top mattress by intelliBED is the only mattress we’ve seen that wears effectively like new for the entire life of the warranty period.

Finally, Intelli-Gel is the safest material we’ve ever found to put into a mattress. It is totally non-toxic, hypoallergenic, anti-microbial and made from food grade materials. It is so safe that it is used in hospitals to cushion patients with the severest wound care situations like bed sores and burns.

Intelli-Gel® is constructed of a Space-Aged Co-Polymer called Gelastic. It is a soft, very strong rubber-like material unlike any other bedding material. There are other foamed gels (nexgel, orthogel and sprayed gels) that are used in mattresses, but they do not compare to Intelli-Gel for cushioning support , safety or durability.

We own and Intelligel topper and really like it. We’d like to take it to our cabin; however, there is no heat in the cabin and in the winter time it gets well below freezing. In the summer the temperatures get in the 90’s. Will this change in temperature every year damage the gel?

    1. Terry Baird

Great question! intellibed Toppers will not freeze and you can even put electric blankets on them. The temperature changes will not affect the performance of the product.
      Appreciate your inquiry!
      Thank you
