WHEN YOU SLEEP BETTER, YOU PERFORM BETTER

Restful, restorative sleep requires reaching five stages of sleep. The most important stages come at the end. In a healthy sleep cycle, the body is essentially paralyzed for about 90 minutes. This means sleeping in the same position through phases one and two, to get to critical stage three and four sleep, followed by REM. This is delta sleep. In delta sleep, the body builds up your immune system and heals your body and consolidates your memories. If sleep is cut short and you awaken, the body doesn’t have time to complete all of the phases needed for muscle repair, memory storage and release of hormones regulating growth and appetite. Then we wake up less prepared to concentrate, make decisions, or engage fully in work, school and family activities.

In fact, many of the most common diseases today, including diabetes, heart disease, and many autoimmune diseases– can be linked to a lack of stage three and four sleep. Interruptions in stage one or two sleep – from repositioning, tossing, turning or any kind of waking – prevents the body from reaching stage three or four sleep.
