Intellibed’s Gel Matrix is even used to help with pain management and healing in burn units, where every pressure point can cause agony. Many chiropractors recommend Intellibed with Gel Matrix sleep systems for the relief and management of back pain.

As an industry disruptor, Intellibed maintains the momentum of continued study and investment into emergent materials, technologies, and ongoing sleep science discoveries. So what began as a straightforward breakthrough in uncompromising support and comfort has evolved into the quest of obtaining the most effective sleep system known to man.

The evolution continues.

History of Mattress Innovation

10,000 B.C.

Straw & Grass Stuffed Mattresses

The mattress and beds are invented. They consist of a pile of straw, grass, or leaves, with animal skins over it.

3,000 B.C.

Wool Stuffed Mattresses

Egyptians invented the raised bed to avoid rodents and snakes. Made of plain wood, the simple platform was topped with a mattress made of wool cushions. Linen sheets and a stone or wooden head support added comfort.

1000 B.C.

Feather Stuffed Mattresses

The wealthier citizens of Rome slept on raised beds of metal, with metal supports to hold the feather or straw-stuffed mattresses.

15TH CENTURY

Down & Feather Stuffed Mattresses

During the Renaissance, this was a time to show your position in life. For the wealthy, they had large impressive wood carved beds encrusted with gold and raised high off the ground, sometimes requiring a stool. The mattress was thickly stuffed with down and feathers, and sheets were made of fine linen.

18TH CENTURY

Cotton Stuffed Mattresses

This time was referred to as the Age of Enlightenment and the bedroom became a private space for sleep. While beds were made of wood, metal frames started to become popular. Cotton stuffed mattresses replaced down.

19TH CENTURY

Metal Bedsprings

When the Industrial Age took the world by storm, the invention of metal bedsprings to support the mattress replaced ropes and wool straps. While they gave more support for your back and stability to the mattress, unfortunately, they made the bed quite squeaky.

20TH CENTURY - 1950s

Innerspring Mattresses

Although it was invented decades earlier by Berliner Heinrich Westphal in the early 1870s, innerspring mattresses became popular and ushered in box-spring platforms creating the beginning of a comfortable and supportive sleep.

20TH CENTURY - 1960s & 1970s

Foam Mattresses

Foam mattresses and pillows replace cotton. During the same time, Memory Foam is created by NASA for seat cushioning and crash protection. This same Memory Foam will be used in mattresses starting in 1992. However, the bed that is really making waves in the industry is the new waterbed.

21ST CENTURY - 2002

Revolutionary Gel Matrix Mattresses

Intellibed introduces Gel Matrix technology. Intellibed is the world’s first bed that is both firm and soft at the same time for maximum back support and spinal alignment as well as maximum pressure point relief. In fact, Intellibed is three times firmer than any traditional foam mattress and relieves pressure points up to 60% better. The result? All other beds become the bed of the past while Intellibed becomes the Bed of the Future.
